ZIP disks have Fujifilm's Advanced super Thin-layer and high-Output Metal Media, better known at ATOMM. ATOMM technology is unique because it offers a dual coating system with a non-magnetic layer for durability and an ultra-thin magnetic layer for superior high density recording. This unique technology allows for the high-density ultra-thin upper layers of magnetic material of 0.1-0.5 mm thickness, instead of the norm of 2.0-5.0 mm. This allows for improved performance and superior signal noise ratio for super high density digital recording. The same ATOMM technology is used in Fuji DDS-4 and DLT IV.
