Drobo 5D DAS Array - 5 Bays - DRDR5A21
Drobo 5D supports up to five 3.5" SATA II/III hard drives or solid state drives, and one mSATA solid state drive (drives of any manufacturer, capacity, spindle speed, and/or cache can be used). Drives are hot-swappable so you can add more drives or swap out the ones you have for larger drives whenever you need more space.
As you fill your Drobo with data, the ten capacity gauge lights on the front start to glow blue. If 40% of the overall capacity is used, four lights will be illuminated. Drobo is so simple that the instructions fit inside the front cover, telling you what these lights mean and what actions you need to take. For example, if a drive does happen to fail, the light for that drive will blink red. If you are running low on space, an empty drive bay shows yellow, indicating that you should insert another drive in that bay.
With Thunderbolt™ AND USB 3.0 interfaces, you can back up your data to Drobo 5D faster than ever before. Use the dual Thunderbolt™ ports to daisy chain up to six Thunderbolt devices. With six Drobo 5D arrays in a chain, you could have up to 96TB of storage capacity!
Drobo protects you not only from drive failure, but has a battery backup to prevent data loss from a power failure as well. This battery protects all data in the Drobo's memory, and all the data in its cache that hasn't even made it to the drive yet! Drobo 5D will stay alive with the battery long enough for data to be written to non-volatile storage, making sure all your important files are still safe. Designed to last the life of the product, the battery recharges itself when power is connected.
5D is space efficient, attractive, and quiet. It has a large variable-speed cooling fan, and you can even set Drobo to spin down drives when they are not in use to further reduce noise and heat, and save energy.
To accompany the introduction of SSD support, the Drobo 5D features Data-Aware Tiering technology to intelligently use the high-performance flash in these drives to speed up the transfer of data. It automatically builds a "transactional" (SSD) and "bulk" (HDD) tier of drives, and writes the data that would benefit most from faster read and write speeds to the transactional SSD tier. Additionally, if data stored in the bulk tier is being read frequently it will become "hot" and be moved to the transactional tier, and vice versa. All you have to do to engage this tiering function is insert an SSD drive into the Drobo.
